arrived in force, Graham found himself out, when every bridge table
was made up. Paula was at the piano. As he approached he caught the
quick expression of pleasure in her eyes at sight of him, which as
quickly vanished. She made a slight movement as if to rise, which did
not escape his notice any more than did her quiet mastery of the
impulse that left her seated.
